Itinerary: Cusco City Tour – archaeological sites
Day 1: Major sights in the city of Cusco and the surrounding hills
We will pick you up from your hotel to begin your half-day tour of the major attractions in the city of Cusco and the hills above the city’s historic center. In addition to the colonial-era Cusco and the Inca Temple of the Sun, or Qorikancha, the Cusco city tour includes the enormous Inca temple complex of Sacsayhuaman, located at the top of the hill overlooking Cusco’s main square, as well as other archaeological sites in the hills around the city.
Your tour will begin with the Inca Temple of the Sun, or Qorikancha, where our expert guide will explain the history of this major Inca religious site. From here, we will continue to the imposing colonial-era cathedral, the interior of which is decorated with dozens of paintings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. From the cathedral we will leave the city by bus to visit the vast Inca temple complex of Sacsayhuaman, where some of the blocks used in the construction weigh more than one hundred tons each.
Our next stop is Qenqo, a limestone outcrop carved into a subterranean altar associated with worship of the Inca earth goddess, or Pachamama. Continuing our exploration of the hills around the city of Cusco, we will visit the Inca military control point known as Pucapucara, before ending this fascinating half-day itinerary at the picturesque water shrine of Tambomachay
